View Gmail In Preview Pane Mode

This flat out doesn't work on Windows 7 Professional using Gmail. I set the preview pane to enabled and set the timeout for the preview and there is NO preview!!

I did exactly as advised by this tip. Still I cannot see preview of mail. What could be wrong?

Windows XP Pro SP3 -- "Labs" doesn't even appear in the drop-down pane. Nothing link a worthless "hint" to discourage readers!

I have Win7 and it works fine using GMAIL in Chrome...

I have Win7 and I didn't think it was working for me either, but I found the little square at the top right hand part of the regular Gmail page (just to the left of the Gear icon) that has horizontal lines in it is the "toggle split pane mode" and clicking on the arrow gives you the option of vertical split, horizontal split or no split. It is set on no split, so naturally we think it is not working. I will now be using Gmail from the website instead of through Thunderbird.
