I bought an ASUS 24" VH242 monitor from Ebay and trying to hook up to 5yr old Compac Presario SR2170NX (Graphics decal on front says ATI Radeon and PCI Express Slot). The cable that came with the monitor had the horizontal slot with 2 sets of 9? pins (I think). Anyways 3 trips to Best Buy didn't help. Then found an adapter I needed to plug into back of my computer (I had no trouble upgrading from a 15" to a 19" last year with an HP monitor) but this one is giving me fits. So now that I have the adapter on and plugged into my computer - Monitor only flashes a box saying NO HDMI signal (which I know because I can't hook up an HDMI cable to the back of my older computer). Then I push a few buttons and I get a box that says NO VGA signal. I press more buttons and I get a box that says NO DVI signal. I thought by at least putting the adapter on, it would at least turn on - not having any of the bells and whistles it came with, but at least work as good as my 19". I'm not very computer literate when it comes to graphics cards etc - so any "help for dummies" would be greatly appreciated. Thank You

Hi and welcome to the forums. I am not sure of which connection you have. These are the variuos Configurations of DVI:

I have an adapter that is VGA to DVI ( DVI - I Dual link ). I believe that monitor is DVI - D Dual link . Ibelieve you either have the wrong adapter, or if you are on a dedicated card the card has failed. With BestBuy, it is best you know what you want when you go in there as they are not necessarily all that knowledgable.

Your monitor: DVI, HDMI, VGA. Your PC I'm not sure about your PC though:
VGA:

DVI:

HDMI:

It most certainly has VGA, and if a dedicated gpu maybe DVI. (it may have integrated ati graphics)
