I recently downloaded a Fractal Generator (TieraZon) and when I save an image as a bmp file (only other option is all files), it also saves as a ZAR file. What is a ZAR file? How do I open it? When I try with Irfanview, I get a message saying, "can't read file header," and won't open. As long as I've got the bmp file, do I really need the ZAR file or can I delete it?

Hi Betty and welcome to the forums. This may be somewhat helpful:

Errors in your registry are one of the common causes for incorrect file associations on your windows system. It is highly recommended that you check your registry for file association errors (will also check for any other registry errors).

The ZAR file type is primarily associated with 'PlayStation2' by Sony Corporation of America. Trivia: The file extension .ZAR was coined by Sony for PS2 games by a programmer that was a fan of photographer David Zar that made Pearl Jam famous with his photos.

I would not pay too much attention to the first thing about the registry thing, although it could possibly be an issue. It is the second sentence that is telling. If you have the .BMP files and can open them, I'd just dump the .zar files.
