Old Lcd A Little Dim But quite usable

I have an old Dell 17" monitor (circa 2001 or something) that is a little dim, with brightness:100 and contrast:70 (if I turn it up to max things are all washed out). It is definitely very usable though, just a little on the dim side. The contrast isn't all that great compared to my sony (2004), but I guess the lcd tech has improved over time. Any thoughts on that? Granted, there's nothing really wrong with it, but still...
