I own the Canon MX860 all-in-one printer and have come across a issue that has my head spinning. I'm tryin to scan some old pictures, but can't seem to do so due to one of my ink cartridges has no ink and theres a alarm on my unit. I can't seem to find any way to clear the alarm so I can use my scanner since I do not really need the print function. Now I know I need to replace the ink, but if the all-in-one printer is made useless just due to ink being out, I'm going to have to write Canon a not so nice letter. If anyone knows a work around for this, please let me know.

Hi, Switzman, and welcome to the forums.

I'm not familiar with that particular model, and generally avoid all-in-ones, in part because of problems like that. But I suspect that there's no way around it.

Printers are designed for one particular function: To make you buy ink. Everything else is secondary to that overriding purpose.

I think you're going to have to write that not-so-nice letter.

I've seen similar issues with my Brother AIO printer. When low on ink, I can't get past that message to scan. Grrrr...

I think canon Mx860 printer alarm is not a multitasking printer. We cannot use it at everywhere.

Hi, nice to meet you.

Well, that's the problem with all-in-one devices. Manufacturers may make you do certain things (e.g. buy inks) or the device is useless. Hence, it's better to have two separate ones, a scanner and a printer. It takes more space and money but pays in the long run. Still though, are you sure the Copy (Xerox/Scanner to printer etc.) function is off? If not, this may be the problem.
