I really want to buy a 3D TV but I'm not very tech savvy so I need some help.
I did some research on google but I still can't decide which one I should buy.
I like LG Cinema 3D and Vizio Theater 3D series for the passive option and I like Samsung and Panasonic for my active option.
Which one should I buy?
I read that LG Cinema 3D ranked #1 in consumer report but what does that really mean?
Any comment, advice, review, etc would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Hi Marnie and welcome to the forums. My personal choice ( and I have one ) is the LG. I wasn't sure of them, but because of the cost factor and the fact that my brother has one and likes it, I got one and have been completely satisfied. I got a 42" and i have a 42" Toshiba ( non 3D though ). Although the Toshiba has a god picture, the LG stands out. As for 3D, I haven't tried that as yet, so really can't speak to how good that is.

My 3D arrives tomorrow.
With no light back ground interfearance, decided on a plasma.

3 things that are good to note.

1080 P is better than 1080i for motion.

If you can, get the wireless adapter.

Look for 2D-3D conversion in the specs.

Hey Rommel, LG included that with my TV. It looks like a flash drive and plugs into the USB port, but I haven't fooled with it.

Cool, which plasma set did you get? Many of them have excellent color depth, I am curious what your results are.

As for wireless, or the 3d conversion... eh, not an issue for me. The Mits is connected via gigabit lan, and I never use it. And I don't care for most 2d to 3d conversions. If you can get your hands on native 3d content, try it. The best movies in 3d (so far), have not been what I expected. Alice in Wonderland for example, was absolutely amazing on the 3d set at home. Surprisingly more realistic, and more enjoyable than at the theaters!

Hi WJ.

Model TC-P50ST30.

Through work we get a Panasonic discount.

That TV with 2 pair of glasses valued at $135 is being delivered to my door for $829.
Looking forward to the wireless adapter that comes with it.

I'll reply back for you and the OP how well it works.

Very nice! Not a bad price either. Enjoy that beauty.

Why doesn't he just use a PC? That way you can upgrade the gpu and all. That's what I do.

He's a 20 yr old working man and that's his thing.
Infact the TV is his purchase through my employee discount program.

I don't have an Xbox, but I do have the PS2 & PS3. :D Have the PS2 hooked up by way of Component rather than the standard hook up so I get Progressive scan. Gaming on that thing is going to be an experience at first for sure. I remember the first time I played a game on the 42" Toshiba.

I game on several platforms ( PS2, PS3, & PC ). There are a lot of games that are not platformed across the board and if you want to play them, you need to have the platform it was ported to.

marniehalifax, are still following along?

Have you narrowed down your choices?
All the brands you listed are good.
Read and research reviews as you have been on a per model bases.

Hope to hear a update on your TV sesarch.

For 3D, Don't mess around with a TV with 120Hz refresh rate. Go for the 240Hz refresh rate TV. Reason: In 3D the TV draws the Right Eye picture, then the Left Eye picture. So a 120Hz refresh = 60Hz Right eye signal + 60 Hz Left eye signal. 60Hz refresh rate is the same as analog NTSC TV, except that in NTSC you get 30Hz Even line refresh rate + 30Hz Odd line refresh rate.

120Hz refresh rate is good for Non-3D HDTV.

Another reason for a 240Hz TV is that it will natively play all current video frame rates.

OP: IGNORE ALL OF THAT.

There is still not a SINGLE SET ON THE MARKET that accepts a 240hz signal, much less 120. The only exceptions are very specialized, and very expensive NVIDIA 3d LCD monitors. The 120HZ signal standard came about to deal with a very specific problem. 24FPS content was not matching up correctly on 60hz sets. Some frames were doubled, others tripled. In effect, you would see a bouncing effect when watching panning content. This was the ENTIRE reason for 120hz. Ensure smooth content no matter the input.

If a 240hz set looks better than a 120 - it is simply because it is using a better image processor and or LCD panel. NOT because of the refresh rate.

So is that why when there's a scene showing something moving it is often a bit jerky? I thought it was just the camera itself.

There is still not a SINGLE SET ON THE MARKET that accepts a 240hz signal, much less 120. The only exceptions are very specialized, and very expensive NVIDIA 3d LCD monitors. That is exactly why. If you want a PERFECT scene to demonstrate this, check out WALL-E. The opening sequence drives me INSANE on 60HZ sets, yet looks amazing on sets designed for 24.97fps OR 120hz sets.

Really? Just today I looked at a Sony Bravia KDL-46NX720 (also avail. in USA), which has a 240Hz refresh rate.

Did you bother researching anything beyond that spec? Such as maybe what SIGNAL it can accept? Because what you have posted has absolutely no proof of a display capable of accepting a 240hz signal. Of course... that might be because there is nothing that can produce the source.

EDIT: I cannot find that exact model on the Sony website - so I took the liberty of using an XBR version.

Quote

Video Signal : 1080/24p (HDMI™ only), 1080/60i, 1080/60p (HDMI™ / Component), 720/60p, 480/60i, 480/60p

Interesting that 240hz content is not supported...

It would be wise, in the future, to understand what is really going on. The PANELS are capable of high frequencies, the ELECTRONICS backing those panels, are NOT.
