Without mentioning names yet... Expect to see more consumer options in more than one of the next generations of hardware for "types of detachable hard drives". For instance; the older platter drives as one option; and then for other options - a hybrid drive and even something similiar to a very high end SSD - maybe even an OCZ. Maybe even a cabled external version or the ability to connect to another device - even a computer.
Other options... Upgradeable RAM, ability to connect to a mobile device.
Strange options... Consumer options for adding security software, defragging a disk (naturally not for SSD's). Even games stores and'or transfered on something such as a flashcard.
Also; expect to see options for the higher end availability of units with price points far exceeding $500

This is a very good point. A tablet will never replace a laptop for functionality and power. Producing a play(sitcom) for radio needs a lot more attention than something for TV.
People want games to be fun and social. A PC game give users a lot more understanding of the complexity of graphic processing and computing in general, but it is more common to find people who just want to play without tweaking to get the best balance between appearance and performance.

Don't confuse ones own opion with the facts.
The highest selling game to date is still Call of Duty; Modern Warfare 2, between both consoles Sony and Microsoft. It sold millions of more copies than any computer based game.
Add together all of the Call of Duty series on any one console; no PC game (series or individual) is capable of reaching those numbers. Also take a glance at how many people are online playing games on consoles versus PC's.
Also people playing consoles are on average; exceeding 22 years of age and spend more on their gaming systems than on their PC's. It makes one almost ask; what PC maker wouldn't mind having those numbers as their stats.

I just wish PC gamers would get the same love that console gamers do; we're getting left in the dust because it's too hard to make efficient games that work across multiple video card drivers. The five year old Xbox can rival the graphics of the latest and greatest gaming machines; anything seem wrong with that?
Gotta tip my hat to smartphones killing the portable consoles, though; with Nvidia's Tegra chips, they're beating the 3DS over the head, and the Tegra 3 is going blow some people's minds once it gets jammed in a phone. The PS Vita doesn't stand a chance, IMO.

The Call of Duty line of games IS a pc line of games ported over to console, also has done well on PC. They do better because the console is cheaper than a gaming rig, not because the experience is better.

I think the handheld units have been hobbled by I-Phone and I-Pad (Worst product name ever IMO) but so has overproducing. It seems like everytime you turned around Nintendo was a offering new handheld unit; they've introduced numerous versions of the DS. Nintendo has pumped out way too many handhelds, possibly over saturating the market.

No they don't, and they don't seem to be caring. Caps and more caps everywhere. You honestly see that being lifted anytime down the road. Consumers don't have options to turn to. Single ISP's have monopolized entire regions and finding one that doesn't have limits isn't easy. Gaming content solely through downloading won't sell more games.

Release date: 2013 Fall, Along with Microsoft trying to stretch console lifespan, the economy sucking as bad as it does reduces the interest in investing another 2-5 billion dollars on a new console and platform launch. It's possible that this number could drop substantially as Microsoft always improves and creates efficiency in it's development process.
CPU - Look for an AMD Krishna or Wichita Fusion APU, possibly custom designed 28nm SoC. Cost: $115+$50(board)
GPU - See above, SoC.
HD- 16GB SSD for fast cache, optional external HDD (up to 1TB) C=$25
Memory: 8GB DDR3 Memory C=$30
Disc drive:Will Microsoft revive HD-DVD or sign on with Bluray licencing? Probably the latter C=$30
Also included:
Kinect 2.0 C=$50
Standard controller=$30
Media: DVD-9 or Bluray, or proprietary disc format (SSD or SDHC class cards will never be cost comparable to disc medium. 5 cents no supply issue, vs. $10 and limited supply, less piracy. I guarantee piracy is a very small percentage.
My cost for everything above is $330 + $50 for misc. casing and packaging. If sold at a $399 price point, this console could be profitable instead of a loss leader.

Companies have a single goal, to make $$$ for the investors/owner(s). That said of course the games are ported from PC to consoles, that's where the $$$ is. You could almost consider the PC version a side effect of getting the game out there to make $$$.
