Do you have ANY artifacts now? (like the minor ones in the first screenshot you posted)

The very first screenshot was actually a digital photo of my monitor, everything after that was with Fraps and I don't have any artifacts when the graphics are behaving (like now). I attached a screenshot I just took so you can see what I mean. The video card is at stock settings with no OC because I wanted to see how the game played. I did enable 2X AA in the game, but that was it (there are very few video options).

Nice. Can you just drive around freely?

Sure can. When you're on a mission you'll be under attack, but once you clear out the bad guys you can drive around all you want.

The first image is what was happening with the 280 drivers, so I tried rolling back to the 275 version and got the second image. Not what I'd call an improvement  so I reinstalled the 280s, and so far the graphics are good again. I'll keep folks posted.

Just wanted to give an update on the driver issue: the uninstall/reinstall worked, I haven't had a single video glitch since I did it. BTW, by uninstalling I mean that I went into Device Manager and uninstalled the card AND the drivers, then rebooted and reinstalled the latest download (280.xx). Worked like a charm.
I learned something the hard way in the game and was wondering if waldojim ran into the same problem with his console version: I skipped something important along the way during one of the missions and as a result couldn't progress to the next level (a critical door wouldn't open). I don't want to give any spoilers so all I'll say is that if it moves, kill it.

Hey Comp, Yeah, the drivers may have not gotten a good install the first time. I haven't had a bit of trouble from the 280.26 drivers.

When you do that, does it switch to the generic VGA driver immediately, or does it then tell you to reboot, and then you have the generic driver?

btw when I do driver installs (at least with nvidia) I usually do a clean install, not upgrade.

Usually, when I unistall the drivers, it will immediately go to the Generic stuff without a restart. Then I can go to the site and get the new drivers.

I know ati's drivers do NOT ask for a restart, but I don't remember if the newer nvidia ones do. I guess you don't need any restart then...

Uninstalling the card and drivers in Device Manager required a restart because the system couldn't see the hardware until I did.
Update on the video problems: It turns out the problem is with the game, there are known issues with vsync so occasionally I get broken graphics or a lockup when I quicksave. Irritating at times but not a deal breaker, the game is worth it. There has already been one automatic update on Steam and I'm hoping for a permanent fix soon. According to what I've found online the issue is tied to the way the game automatically adjusts to your hardware --- I think manually adjusting your settings would have been better.

So it can't see the video card, yet you can still do stuff using the standard VGA driver? huh?

Oh, and is v-sync a good idea or not? Need for speed world has the setting and I don't notice much difference with or without.

Yes, the system sees a generic card and uses generic drivers, but can't see the actual card that's installed so can't install the card-specific drivers. After rebooting Windows correctly identifies the "new" hardware and then the proper drivers can be installed.

I've got vsync set to "smart" in the game and it prevents video "tearing". I can play with it disabled but the game doesn't look as good.

In NFSW it's just on or off.

Interestingly, after the latest patch those were my only options, they got rid of the "smart" setting. However, between the patch and the newest nVidia drivers that I downloaded today all the video issues seem to be resolved.

Not that it did me much good, I just finished. This is one of the best games I've played for a long time. Despite the glitches I had a blast, and now that they've fixed the problems I highly recommend it.

Kinda annoying that they released the 286 or whatever drivers... I downloaded 280 when I got the new graphics card a few days ago. (and what's with the decimals and such on it anyway? ATI just has catalyst package 11.7, 11.8, etc)
