IKR...I can hear all the disappointed sheep now. We have a new phone yet again that is only sporting features that have existed on other platforms for more than 24 months and at least a year on other features. That 2 year headstart on everyone else has turned into 2 years of catching up to everyone else. LOL

So basically. if you have an iPhone 4. You're trading up to yet another iphone, just with a faster CPU and a better camera.
An OS that is finally lost its leash from the PC. However you can only download what you upload to the iCloud, or buy on iTunes/App Store. While other devices can download apps, music, video and more from anywhere? Looks like the old leash has turn into a heavier ball and chain. IMHO.

so what about all the iPhone 5 rumors? The cases they showed? The guys who did a aluminum shell of a possible look and style? The metal backing? The slightly larger screen or body? The iPad2/iPod Touch 4G-esque case design?

Spme thing havent changed. 2 color choice, but now you get 3 storage sizes. I am glad there is finally a 64GB model. But I wont sell my present phone jsut to get it. Because the update isn't worth an extra $200 in cost on retail since I always pay cash.

Even tho I had no plans to get the newer model, if I was; I personally woudld find this very disappointing and very insulting. All thsi money the fans continously brags about that Apple has, they they arent giving you anything. In fact, they are doing to the fans what Sega and Nintendo did for years with consoles. They basically milked the cow with each release, with stuff they could have given you the year prior. Example, when the 16bit Nintendo was released, the technology existed to have released a 64bit or better system. Theer were PC's with 128bit graphic acapabilities during that time? Why dis consoles evolve so slow? because slower makes more money over time.

FOr anyone with an iPhone 3GS this is a substancial upgrade. If you have an iPhone 4. Its not.

Theer si nothing on iOS 5 that can't be made to work on the present iPhone 4, that Apple will surely make sure doesn't get ported to iPhone 4; to get people to get the new iPhone 4S.

Ho Hum, ho hum ho hum... How underwhelming considering there are other phones out there that have had all of these features for quite sometime. Apple's hardware is starting to fall well behind the times. Interesting considering they are SUPPOSED to be the innovators in this market.

Um, businesses have to make money or they don't stay in business, right? How is "milking the cow" any different than releasing new tech when they both are a means of producing sales? In fact,I can't believe people are complacent with being coerced into buying a new product every year to replace what is most likely a still perfectly good piece of equipment. You're right about your console analogy, they did have 64bit capabilities when SNES was released, it was called Neo Geo and it cost $800 for the system and $200 for each game. Latest and greatest tech have high cost, personally I'd rather see an innovation in battery technology before my phone adds more features. I have to plug my droid in every night or it won't make it till morning which is way more inconvenient for me than anything else, in fact I can't use my super duper 4G capabilities because of the huge drain on power so it stays off and I've paid a higher price for tech I can't use effectively. It's a phone, both Droids and Apple have their pros and cons regardless of what the haters or fanboys of either camp say.

I'm sorry to hear that the 4S doesn't come with all the glitz, glam and shiny baubles you expected it to.

Everyone expected a number change, and it didn't happen. Shocking isn't it?

In case nobody noticed, the iPhone 4 is still selling VERY well, so a complete redesign would have been wasteful and possibly counterproductive. There is something to be said for continuity, something that the business community might appreciate more than techies. Any way you look at it, the 4S is a significant step forward for Apple. You also have to credit Apple for not expecting everyone to run out and replace their phone every time they announce a new product.

The true insult would have been for Apple to release a new design which would have put the iPhone 4 to shame. Apple didn't do that. On the other hand, the 4S is enough of a step forward that it will probably attract many people who have an iPhone two or three generations old, while the iPhone 4 with 8G of memory is priced aggressively enough for people to give it a second look before picking up an Android phone in that price range.

I think that once the dust settles and the 4S actually gets into consumers' hands the "disappointment" will fade very quickly.

Time will tell.

I personally found the update fine. It wasn't revolutionary, but it helped catch the iphone up to standards already out there. The question is how will it compete in a few months?

Android is releasing it's Ice Cream sandwich version and NFC should be taking off.

Win7 is gaining a bit of traction, and with Nokia releasing it's phone, should definitely be a competitior.

There's no doubt in my mind that Apple is going to compete, but I just feel like they didn't go all out this time. Samsung's next devices will blow this away. Motorola will be directly under Google giving it some edge. I hope to see some radical changes for the iphone 5

I thought the Siri part is pretty darn cool. Easily the best feature I've seen. Doubt I need a 4s to use Siri.

That would have been the high point of the show. I think it's safe to say the iPhone 5 will be another year from now.

Dual core vs single w/faster GPU, world phone, natural voice (SIRI) commands - nice additions, just not what the rumor mill predicted.

@HankRearden Sorry, but I think Siri is 4s only. Whether you believe thats cynical marketing or that it needs the 4s processing power, you decide. Since they're still selling the 4 and 3gs, and given that the 3gs is still the #2 selling phone, I reckon if they could've made it work on those they would of. More total sales > more upgrades when you factor in the additional revenue from apps + content.

I remember a long time ago when the Mercury was expected to be released. It was to have a Wide Screen Display and a G4 processor in a notebook. Year after year it failed to make an appearance. I waited so long for it I forgot I was waiting for it entirely until it finally did release. And then I thought, oh yeah... The mercury... The iPhone 5 designs we saw in the rumor mill are likely pretty close to reality. It's likely the device for what ever reason wasn't ready for prime time.

I wasn't expecting much myself. In fact, I thought the Siri thing was going to be lame. Instead, of all the things I saw the Siri assistant turned out to be what impressed me the most and by a huge margin. I don't plan on playing games on my iPhone beyond Bejeweled Blitz, which is fine on my i4. The new email features with rich text capability is pretty nice too. I can use Bold, Italic, etc in my emails. I really wanted that. I hope I can highlight in yellow too. That would really be great for me.

But the Siri feature. Before all my Android friends gloat on the lack of an iPhone 5, I would ask you to seriously watch the demo, skip to the Siri part and watch it in full with an open mind. Then tell me with a straight face that you're not impressed with Siri. Whatever your expectations are, Siri is actually the high point of the show in my opinion. Don't just write it off as voice commands that Android already has. I've owned Android for over a year. I know what it's voice commands do. Watch Siri. They go a solid step further. Perhaps even two or three steps further. Don't make me explain it. Watch the demo. It's almost like the computer in Star Trek really. My only hope is that we can change the voice. I'm not fond of the voice they chose. I'd like to have a voice from England and a bit of snooty in it too just for fun.

If Siri is for the 4s, I'd buy it for that feature alone. Did you watch the whole Siri demo? If yes, what did you think? Did you see the guy jogging and making an appointment? The phone replies the conflict and he just says, move it to 2:00PM and it works? Pretty amazing. Like he was having a conversation with Siri, not just commands, but almost conversation like experience.

Siri sounds like the same b-atch here:
