I own a small business and I also blog about email marketing, though I've yet to use a software to email customers. It is definitely my next investment, but I was wondering what would be easiest to use and allow total customization. I tried using one in the past on a free trial, though it didn't seem to let me customize much other than choosing templates.

Why not trying to use social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, Reddit and such? Or write a blog with good content, that helps a lot. It's a process and it's a rather slow one, but you get there after a while of good work.

What kind of special features you're looking in a email marketing software? As most of the email marketing software has choose a template feature and they let you use a personal notation for each receiver like using their name in salutation rather then just Hello. This makes email marketing more user friendly.
