So my roommate and I activated our internet a while ago... and it was working perfectly fine up until two days ago when she downloaded Portal 2 and began to play it. Although my internet worked fine, hers wouldn't connect. She reset the router but then afterwards, both of ours didn't work and hasn't worked since. The timing of this issue is what is feeding my suspicions, but since I'm not entirely sure I wanted to ask people who are more knowledgable about these matters. My roommate's laptop is loaded with games, including Portal, Portal 2, Left4dead 2, Assassin's Creed, Dead Island, and Team Fortress 2 (the latter which she plays most frequently). I've only been using my laptop to do normal things, such as occasionally checking Facebook, checking my email, doing my homework etc.

My mom seems to firmly believe that this situation is her fault, as she claims that she got the cheapest form of internet available because she expected us to only need it to do homework and such.

Is it really my roommate's fault, or part of her fault, that our internet is so messed up now?

Resetting the router took it to its factory settings.
Call your ISP and they'll walk you through the steps to configure it.

Crap happens so don't swet it.

Its not broken, just needs configured.
What is the make and model?

No, downloading and playing games does not hurt your internet or router. Otherwise, such things would no longer be available, as people wouldn't put up with that.

If by reset your router, you mean you unplugged it and plugged it back in, then don't worry, nothing SHOULD be lost.

SO, first lets try for a few basic connectivity tests. With a cable physically plugged into the router from your computer, click start-orb , and in the search box type CMD and press enter. In the new box that appears, type ipconfig and press enter. Copy everything, and paste it here. This is so we know you are getting a proper IP address, and we can help you more.

Also, locate the make and model of your router. Post that as well.

DO NOT post any logins or passwords though, we have no need for that.

Thank you for all those who responded! :)) We solved our internet issue by calling a technician who said that our problem was rather "unique and fascinating" and that he had "never seen anything like this before". Well I guess all that matters is that it is fixed. But now our videos are loading very slowly and our internet is also slower than before. Could that have something to do with her games? Or is it just a consequence of fixing our internet?

PLZ post the make and model of this router.

The games should not be an issue.
My son games on his console through the same router that wirelessly handles my laptop and wifes laptop and my PC thats hardwired to it.
Zero noticable slowdown for any of us.

This could be a configure issue regarding a firewall??
Check with the tech about this. You paid for the service I presume, you need to be satisfied.

It could be a firewall issue. I remember that before I had issues with taht for a while with a new router on both computers. One day, it stopped and never did it again. I suspect my firewall (and then a good update), as I'm the only one with windows 7 64 and MSE (XP and MSE on another machine, w7 64 and avast on another...).

What did he mean unique?

And maybe the technician divided the internet speed between your two computers? That can be done, right?

Yeah, you use a router, right? But it's not like each guy gets 50% of the speed all the time, if the other guy isn't doing much and I'm downloading a lot of stuff, I'm using most of the bandwidth.
