How about right click an application, go to "properties" and type in a custom keyboard command. Yeah. Its faster than your method.

the first 10 applications that are pinned to your task bar are also automatically given keyboard shortcuts.
pressing the Windows key + whatever slot the program is in.
by default Win+1 launches Internet Explorer. Win+2 launches Windows Explorer Libraries and Win+3 launches Windows Media Player...
1 through 0 can be used in this manor, and is considerably less effort than Windows>*first3letters*>Enter

I use this search feature all the time and it is a great time saver. I rarely go looking for an icon now.

I love doing this but the search takes forever, i've looked at the index and made it bare minimum but is it too much to ask to look through at most 200 files? Help?
