How about doing an article on programs that read the MID (Manufacturers IDentification) code, that is encoded on blank DVDs (CDs?). The MID code will tell you who actually manufactured the disk, regardless of the packaging name. The MID code also tells burners the MAX burning speed of the disk. Kprobe is the only MID program reader that I'm aware of, BUT there are suppose to be many others avail. on the internet. I'm sure that some MID readers will give more information that other readers. I'd like to see different MID readers compared.

I've never read anything in USA computer magazines about MID codes. I read about MID codes in the Australian magazine, PC User.

Where I live, actual "branded" DVD media is almost impossible to find. All DVDs/CDs sold here are generic (pirated) knock-offs. ALL of them "claim" high burn speeds, but the MAX burn speed is NEVER correct. I've purchased DVD's which said they were 16X, but wouldn't burn faster than 1.2X!!!!!!

Thanks!

Programs like ImgBurn can do this.
