I have a customers Aspire 5520. Their issue was that their Windows installation was messed up and that their DVD drive didn't work. I reformatted and reinstalled Windows to find that their DVD drive was indeed not working. I swapped it out with a known working DVD drive from a Compaq Presario. Windows sees it in "My Computer" until you put a cd in it, then it disappears. I reinstalled it in the Compaq and it works just fine. What could be going on here?

Try going into Device Manager, uninstalling the DVD drive, then rebooting.

There isn't anything there to uninstall. When it vanishes from My computer it vanishes from the device manager, too.

Could there be a bad cable in the machine?

Good thought. I could be that the Data cable from the Hdd has come loose ( may as well check the power cable too ).

You might try the filter fix for disappearing optical drives.
