i already do this a couple of months ago because my machine has been infected extensionFile.exe virus, it makes all my folder turn to executable files. i tried it to safe mode and run malwarebytes software and i think it help.. haha. it helps only to freeze the malware/virus. because when is click the folder with .exe it make all the other folder executable again. and i notice that my machine getting slowly and slowly and slowly until it not responding and stuck up. so, i have no choice but to reset my machine. now turn on my machine into safe mode and run again malwarebytes. After this i knew it already that it freezes only the malware/virus on my machine. i cant delete the folders because i have so many usable files there. lastly i used a shadow copy software that copying the files that have been locked by a virus even by the windows. and that's it..

I have used ComboFix that I downloaded from the web to really find some nasty stuff on my workstation.

I also use an Iron Key USB device that has Firefox builtin to the device to provide a secure tunnel while online.

Great article above...seriously!

Being an IT Pro, I have had plenty of experience with removing malware, and know first hand that much of today's malware involve rootkits. Regarding the comment in the article about the infection killing AV scanners, there is a trick I use to circumvent this that works most of the time. In safe mode (of course), navigate to the original executable of the AV program, and rename its exe file to something random, like "bogus.exe" Since these infections look for the AV programs' running process by key words, you will trick the infection this way, and can scan to heart's content.

Combofix should be used with extreme caution...one wrong move can apparently screw up your PC royally. This is prominently posted at both tech forums I frequent, The Elder Geek and Bleeping Computer.

Incidentally, both of these provide great step by step coaching through malware removal. I've used them several times.

I think there're others too, but these two are very good.

I get infected windows system restore virus last week, it take me two days to get rid of it, avast antivirus software is a good choice.
http://www.spywarere...tore-virus.html told me that after deleting the virus, wisepcdoctor should be used to repair damaged windows registry.

a method I use for a future disaster recovery is I save any downloaded program installers, driver update files and zip source files (with version numbers appended to the name of those that don't include it originally) offline on an external drive so I don't have to try to remember where on the web they all came from. I can also keep several versions in case an update is worse than the original
for virus protection I switched to MSE (after my OEM McAfee expired) plus ad-aware free, spybot s&d, malwarebytes and superantispyware. every couple of days I run a scan with one of them on a round robin cycle.

You mention the proxy service in IE...I have noticed in many cleanups of customer infected systems that the virus will tick the proxy box and after removal with something like malwarebytes you find that no web pages will load until you dig in and uncheck the proxy box.

its also worth mentioning some additional free AV options that many of the big ISP such as comcast and ATT etc, offer free AV suites with their service like Norton and McAfee

I do not think that the 1st "Step" in fighting malware
should be getting into "Safe Mode" ; other Options should
be explored before doing that . Since many of today's
"infections" seem to involve Fake/Rouge "security" programs
and they come in many different "flavors", IF you know the
SPECIFIC "Name" of that "program", it would be wise to
check for an "Uninstall Guide" on the highly regarded
BleepingComputer.com Site, specifically at
www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-___-____
where the "Name" would be put into the blank spaces .

Don't forget to turn off System Restore to remove all restore points that now include your malware infection.

I just wanted to add a Malware scanner that I found to clean infections that MBAM missed. It's called "Emsisoft" It has a free and a paid program, but for an on demand scanner I found it did an outstanding job.

If you get infected with "System Fix," you DO NOT want to delete any temp files! "System Fix" deletes shortcuts found in various locations and stores backups of them in the %Temp%\smtmp folder. It does this so that when you try to launch a program from your Start menu, none of your shortcuts will appear, making you think that your computer has a serious problem.

My computer has been running slow for months with lock-ups and blue screens. I found this article while searching for answers to malware problems on my phone. Thank you so much for posting this! I went to safe mode with networking and downloaded malwarebytes. The quick scan found three Trojan viruses and my computer is back to normal! I'll never trust free virus editions that lack the malware protection. This was a huge help for me and great troubleshooting for any other novice computer user like myself. Thanks again for the great post!

My problem is simple. I can not download ANY anti-virus software. Every attempt gives me a "failed to scan" message. Even though I have run AVG on it for years with no problems Windows says my anti-virus software is turned off. If I try to turn it back on it says I have no anti-virus software and would I like to download one. I try to download and get the same message "failed to scan". I've also tried Windows Defender Offline and can't get my PC to boot with the disc I burned. FRUSTRATED as you might imagine :-P
