I'd LOVE to buy an unlocked phone for say $199 (same price as the Kindle Fire). I absolutely HATE getting locked into a 2 year contract, but I also hate spending $600 for a modern phone in order to avoid the contract. The compromise for me now is to buy 1-to-2 year old phones off ebay, but if Amazon was to sell an unlocked Android phone for $200, then I (and a lot of other people) would be all over it!

Being locked in or paying exorbitant prices is fairly unique to the good ol' US of A - so that market is not too large (globally).
$99 with a Prime account might work - for those who just can't stop shopping at Amazon!
To disagree without being disagreeable is the art of debate. Simply because one has a strong opinion, it does not necessarily make an alternative opinion less valid.
