OR... you can use Freemake. They have a downloader that is not limited to YouTube, and a seperate video converter and audio converter. www.freemake.com

I always use the video downloader inside my Avant browser, no other tools needed.

You can try download Youtube from this website:

http://www.tubekeeper.com/

copy and paste youtube video page URL and paste to the site,
it will generate download link for you (FLV, MP4-HD, 3GP).
Facebook, Metacafe, Dailymotion, Tudou...etc video download supported too.

You also can perform video search through the Tubekeeper Video Search Engine.

I closed the installer on the THIRD extraneous application it wanted to install on my computer. The first was an 'Ask' toolbar, and the second was some sort of a shopping thing. If you try to install this quickly, you will find your computer filled with junkware. I am honestly surprised to see PC World recommending this kind of thing.

i don't use programs i use my browsers developer tools to track what i'm downloading in the webpages then copy/paste the URL, it works with every site and format and it's nearly impossible or very hard to stop that

plus i don't need to convert them because i play them with CCCP or VLC

Or you can just use VLC and open the Youtube link with it. That'll download (and optionally convert) the content. In case you only wanted the music track from a music video, for instance.

Which link? Mine was a google search. Seems unlikely it would do that.

I scanned the file with Norton before I downloaded it. It was clean. Program works perfectly.

Which is why I recommend open source software, like VLC, rather than the usual windoze 'freeware' and 'demoware' crap that is usually infected in all kinds of awful ways, and is often just re-skinned versions of other commercial products.

Yeah, probably simplest is to just get a Linux ISO and VirtualBox or almost any other example of virtual machine software. Something like the 'Ubuntu Software Center' will have the tools, all built right and ready to go. Take a few seconds to resume a sleeping Linux VM, do the thing you wanted, put it back to sleep and quit. No muss, no fuss.

Tested:

Macports version of youtube-dl (sudo port install youtube-dl) appears to work.
