The fan on that PSU (Seasonic X750) doesn't run unless it needs to. Since the machine was idling, the PSU fan wasn't running, so it didn't have any of the real sticky soot inside it, just some odor. I did clean it, but it wasn't bad at all. That part of the house just suffered smoke and water damage. It started when heavy rains flooded my basement, tipped over a gas can, and the fumes made their way to the gas water heater, which ignited them.

Yes, Rommel is one of the case modding masters around here. His machines are terrific, very well planned out and very clean work.

Oh, is this one of those PSUs where it has to be over a certain amount of load to run the fan, right? Man, I hope that didn't affect your family too much.
I've wondered about getting a case that uses larger fans (this has 80mm, but most of the newer ones seem to use 120mm ones) for noise reduction (and because the front usb ports on this one don't work). I don't really like the gray style of this case; black looks better and would fit in best with my existing setup. I haven't really pursued it though.

Have you checked out the Rosewill cases on Newegg?
http://www.newegg.co...1&name=Rosewill
They're decent cases for budget builders, and they tend to get good reviews. I recently used a Rosewill mini-tower for my wife's build and, considering it's a $30 case, I was impressed: rolled edges, nice fit and finish, conservative good looks. I've used other Rosewill products and haven't had any fail yet. If I'm not mistaken they're Newegg's house brand.
This is the case I used for my wife's PC...

...but I don't recommend it for an enthusiast build, it will only take a miniATX board or smaller. It was perfect for her, though. I wish I had a picture of what I stuffed into it, I don't think anyone will believe me

What I want is basically:
-matte black finish (fairly plain)
-must accept full ATX motherboard
-should have a reasonable amount of space (this 550ti fits in here, but just barely avoids bumping into the hard drive cage)
-uses fairly large fans (120mm)
-has a top mounted psu (the buttom mounted ones I've seen do NOT have holes below the psu, so you must have the fan up, and the psu will be taking in hot air from the gpu, plus I can drop screws and crap in the psu and top vents that way)
I doubt I need anything more than an intake fan, since the cpu fan blows out of the case (and the dual-slot gpu has vents facing the back of the case, pushing some air out). I've heard good things about antec cases, and this case here is an old antec. Also, I don't want/need a PSU; I bet the rosewill ones are crap, and my seasonic is already at least as good as the ones that come with antec cases. On the other hand, I may just stick with this case, as it's good enough mostly.

As I noted earlier I have an Antec case (the Sonata III 500), and I really like it. It comes stock with a 120mm exhaust fan, and I ended up installing a 120mm intake fan this summer when I was playing Alice: Madness Returns and OC'ing my video card. You can see the new fan on page 2 of this thread, it's mounted on the back of the hard drive cage and blows over the card (good placement, Antec). I intentionally left it in when I installed the water cooling kit because I've heard of problems with motherboard components overheating when the CPU fan is removed. So far the temps are good.

Unfortunately, most of the sonatas come with power supplies, and all are too expensive for me. This is a very low priority thing for me though.

Understood, that's why I brought up the Rosewills, they're perfect for budget builders --- inexpensive even with the PSU that some come with (and don't have to used).
Nothing wrong with daydreaming, I'm the one with his eye on the Corsair case that I can't justify.
