If someone sends you an image via email (like Yahoo) and you view that image through your web browser is it possible for them to install malware on your computer or be able to then monitor what you do on your computer?

Pretty unlikely. It's not like a word document, which can contain a malicious macro. The only thing they can do is, if the image is located on a remote server, see what your IP is and how many times you downloaded the image (which includes when you open the email).
