There is not going to be an end to surreptitious attempts to track and manipulate us unless we fight back a LOT. Now that Carrier IQ has been exposed, we can expect future monitoring software to become ever-harder to detect, expose, and remove. "Weaselware" is far too mild a term, by the way. How about "deceitware"?omment

Sadly, this is just a me-too, and one that almost nobody seems to understand.

Amazon's marketplace requires not only that you install their (extra) marketplace software to your SmartPhone, but that YOU KEEP IT INSTALLED if you want to use the apps you get from them.

It's only going to get worse.

Quote

Technically, weaselware is any informationtechnology product designed or distributed for dishonest purposes ... .

Recent examples include ... persistent cookies ... .

Clearly you fail to understand the necessity for a mechanism that maintains statefullness in a stateless protocol such as TCP/IP, and that HTML cookies were designed for such purpose long before they came to be exploited by some.

Do not blame the tool for how it is used.

Just exactly what is Weaselware? My understanding is that a weasel is somewhat like a ferret. A Wolverine is a member of the weasel family. Is Microsoft turning a Wolverine loose on the world? Sombody needs to clarify their statements.

It is a crying shame that people do NOT have more of a "backbone" as you mentioned. If they did, not only would "crapware" like this not be allowed, nor would the atrocities occuring at our airports be allowed.

Nobody seems to be asking the Question: Will Microsoft be required to turn over to the Government any Records of which Software they cut off, whose it was, and why? Likewise, how much of the info that Carrier IQ records will wind up in the Hnds of the Government? Scary!!

Wecome to the New World Order...? Well it sure seems it's headed in that direction. Especially with some of the new bills which by the way will make this type of thing perfectly Legal for the Goverment and some Software Venders to use. And will be auto installed on everything that has a chip. Next even you. Yes it's a Slipery slope that Microsoft and other Software vendors aren't sliding down but leaping joyfully down.

Are you advocating for or against such? And, of what use to government?

Well, if you listen to those here who claim to know enough to promptly pass judgement on CIQ, the telcos have no real need for it, because they are already gleaning everything possible from you cell phone. And, we already know that some telcos bowed to the Bush administration's demands for private data.

It's great to see that someone gets it. Maybe it's time for "Occupy Software?" LOL

OS - Not to be confused with Operating System.

Still, I'm hard pressed to understand of what interest to government such things as the operating temperature of the battery in ones cell phone.

Fight Back? I for one will never use a cell phone Because of practices like Carrier IQ uses.

Nor will I EVER download ANYTHING from Mickeysofts "App Store". What software I use on MY computer is MY business, NOT Mickeysofts!!!!!

Pirate-ware isn't looking so bad now, huh?
