Microsoft did their own in-house testing in an effort to determine the viability of allowing PC and Xbox gamers to play each other via Xbox-Live and came to the same conclusion that KB/M players would have too much of an advantage.

How many Microsoft XBox controllers there are out there (for console gamers that go through their effective usage quite rapidly) and then end up needing a replacement. My idea was to offer a type of internal part swap out.

There is no "good" keyboard and mouse combo. Everything is left upto the player on what feels best for them. I have a high quality Razer Mamaba mouse, for the speed, then a regular keyboard, BUT I also use a command pad, whichs allows me to ditch the keyboard and have my left hand focused better. Examples, Logitech G13, Belkin Nostromo, etc. I have used the Belkin Nostromo, Saitek Pro Gamer Command Pad, and currently, the Cyper Snipa Gaming Pad. The command pad helps with not cramping your hand to a little area on the keyboard and also allows you to spread your arms some, so I can sit back and relax at my PC desk.
As far as the debate over whats better, the console gamepad vs the Keyboard/mouse combo, is no longer a debate. The truth is right in front of you. Console Gamers and PC gamers will never face off for the simple fact, the PCs are much more powerful and more adjustable then a game console. A novice PC gamer can out duel a expert Console gamer if they were to ever meet online, which they wont.
The question you should be asking, How much longer will consoles be around? If the rumors are true, the next Xbox will actually be a Windows Home server, aka, a PC that can run Xbox games. I have always beleived that Microsoft can end the console wars by makeing a X-ROM, a player that can play Xbox on a PC. All Xbox controllers work on a PC and a keyboard and mouse work on a console, so WHY ARE THEY DIFFERENT. Its time to end consoles.

yep yep, it was Shadowrun that was the smoking gun and caused them to stop doing cross platform gaming, the pc gamers were beating the consol gamers like nothing.
There was a article in Game informer talking about the Halo series and the aim assits that bungie developed to help the players hit there target.
if i recall correctly they put 3 features that helped gamers one was gravity similar to auto aim where the reticle is attracted to the player, not full blow auto targeting though. another feature was a slight sensitivity drop when the reticle was over the player so you moved a little slower. the other was acceleration, that speed up effect you get when you push the stick all the way to the left and right.
They said they spent year refining the system since halo 1 which is why the last halo had so many players and was easy to pickup.

We ran an interview last year with Kevin Unangst where he basically said that wasn't the case: http://www.pcworld.c...ndows_play.html

Plus, I'd rather pick up a controller and play a game regardless of the genre.
What about the others in the article that would prefer a game controller over a keyboard and mouse? Well, there are none.

Bro Cross-platform gaming has happened already for one. Your idea for X-Rom is fine, but overall performance would still be dependant on the other components of the computer. That defeats the whole purpose of the XBOX concept(1 of them at least), which is so that everyone has equal hardware. If the only purpose is to play games that are configured for a controller, that as well has been executed in current games(XB controller w/ PC game).

If you'd rather be on a comfortable sofa or recliner with a controller, and a cat in your lap, playing the game on the big screen (or full wall projector), versus hunkered over a computer on a desk, then that's all that matters. The game will be playable, and it will have been tested to BE playable with a controller identical to the one in your very hands.
And with consoles, MANY of these games have cooperative play modes, and that ALWAYS kicks ass when you have actual physical FRIENDS over to play WITH you.
The PVP games tend to just suck. I think I only ever 'won' a single round of HALO online PVP, where everyone spawned with rocket launchers, and nobody else seemed to know you fire at the wall or floor near the people, not AT the people, with a rocket launcher. I guess they were too hard-wired for making insta-kill head shots. Most of the time, you spawn and a sniper bullet goes through your head before you even get to look or move. Wash, rinse, repeat. So whatever control scheme you use, it's pretty pointless.
For certain games, like RTS titles, yeah, the pointing device and keyboard totally wins out, but mainly because the whole game was designed around having a pointing device and keyboard.
With the console, it will boot the first time, and play perfectly... unless it's 'Skyrim', or really any Bethesda game. How they get away with shipping games that crash ALL THE TIME, I will never know.

Developers pretty much can't develop fast paced FPS games anymore because consoles are incapable of recreating the experience. Look up defrag 2008 world cup on youtube by trixo. Can consoles even recreate a 1/4 of the movement or jumps made? When they can do that, then gamepad players might have a chance to go up against the precision of the mouse.

Often the PC version is just a port from the XBOX version.

If you can find the adapters yes that's true. In my area they just don't exit. I have maybe a dozen or more Xbox controllers, one is a single joystick and mini keyboard, Guess what, can't find and adapter. I don't care for the dual joystick controllers at all though this might be due to the disability i have with my hands. I do prefer my keyboard and Mouse and PC gaming. And they are doing a New Game called Dust 514 which is in Alpha at the moment and it is Cross Platformed to Consoles and PC here's a link to it, It's also a MMO. You may have to copy and paste it into your address bar " http://www.pcworld.c...l_gox_h_cbintro "
It will be interesting to follow this as i Loved playing and Beta Testing " Black Prophecy " till they Royally messed it up. I think that you will see more and more of this type of gaming though in the future of gaming as the platforms try to conform to more and more types of player styles and platforms. Also " Dust 514 " will be Free To Play with and online Store. It will be part of the EVE universe from what they are saying.
