Javascript To Css Code

I just tried clicking on these pictures and realized that it is not possible unless the Firefox add-on “NoScript” is inactive. Usually, there would be a kind of pop-up where the lightbox is. Is that because javascript is required? That’s just my guess, but am I correct? Could this be achieved using CSS? How so? I simply want users with an inactive javascript to be able to use the “View Larger” option.
