I want to replace a 200 GB hard drive with a 1 TB drive on a desktop computer. I have the origional OS and driver disks and want to start over with as clean a system as possible. If I use a clone proceedure, will it contain all the "cobbwebbs" from the old registery? What system files do I need to be sure to copy from the old drive before switching to the new one? And how do I get to them? I have an external drive to help with the change over. Thank you for any help you can provide.

If you have the original OS & Driver disks, just use those ( be sure to disconnect the other HDD before doing so ). Once done, just update everything and you will be good to go. All you need to do is to change your boot to that drive. You could use an app to clone your HDD to the new one as well. In either case, just be sure to format the new drive first ( NTFS ).

Hi, rfinet.

Do you have an actual Windows disc for that computer? If it's a name-brand PC and you're using the version of Windows that came with it, the answer is almost certainly "no."

Whether or not you have such a disc will drastically change how you do the upgrade/reinstall.
