Edit. I just hooked it up to an external monitor, and it works fine. So at least I'll be able to access files and run programs, but it is no longer portable. Also, I can use it's SD card slot and have not lost the contents of my HDD. I still want to either fix it or get another one. It seems like all the new laptops have gone to LED instead of LCD screens. What is the advantage to this ?

I don't know the exact procedure for your laptop, but try this: Disconnect from the AC charger/adapter and remove the laptop's battery. Then press the power switch and hold it down for at least 30 seconds (a full minute might be better). Restore power and turn the laptop on; your screen's backlight may be back in operation. If this does not work, try a search on the manufacturer's website (using another computer, of course) for the proper procedure, or do a Google/Yahoo/Bing search for forum threads mentioning your computer's make and model.

Well that is the trend in laptops anyways. Smaller, thinner and longer battery life. Ultrabooks was a buzzword at CES.
