"The price of admission also buys you entry into YNAB forums and financial-planning classes, where you can glean advice from experts."

YNAB's classes and forums are are all free. You don't need the software to be a part of any of them.

We do also offer a paid one-on-one coaching service, but that is not essential.

The problem with software like Evernote is if you use the mobile apps you can't view your notes if there is no internet connection. This can be a serious issue with some people.

It would be nice of PC World listed an alternative to Evernote that lets you view your notes while offline.

For note taking I can't believe that this story didn't include EssentialPIM. It is a note taking program as well as calendar, password manager, and todo list. I have it and have been a beta tester for years. You can even sync it to Google docs and Google calendar.
Another shocker was no mention of LibraOffice at all. LibraOffice is a contender to Microsoft Office and provides many of the same features. I have been using OpenOffice for years in business to write contracts and do spreadsheet work.

I am just truly shocked by the lack of inclusion of LibraOffice. It would be nice to know why the author excluded it.

Gimp is mentioned in the article under the Incumbent section of Photo Editing.

I've found Cobian Backup from CobianSoft to be much better than Acronis's offerings. It's FREEWARE and has a plethora of features including volume shadow copy (VSC) support so you can backup files while they're in use.

Have you tried wine? While it can be somewhat confusing at first, it will run most Windows apps. Otherwise, look for Linux alternatives. There are many, and they are free.

I am a user of YNAB and I was also going to say the same thing. The forum is free, not included in the price. Trial users are welcome to ask questions as well, and even prospective users. The classes are available at multiple times to try and cover most of the world at a reasonable hour for somebody, and there are recorded classes available if you can't make the live ones, as well as tutorials if you want to get started with a guide or see how it works before you download the trial.

Most of the 'experts' are other users who have made most of the noob mistakes themselves in the past, but also on the boards are several of the teachers of the classes which adds even more value.

I use Quicken. I have looked for an open source alternative, but have not found a good one yet, I like the ledger format and ease of entry. I have not found anything even comparable for Quicken. I rarely will pay for a program. I am still running Quicken 2001 on Windows 7. I would love and open source alternative for Linux Mint.
