A cheaper alternative to Lightroom is Adobe Photoshop Elements. If you look for sales, you can get it for half the price of Lightroom.
Not only does PSE provide and excellent way to manage your photos, but provides an editor to put a little more "kick" into less than perfect pictures. If you shoot in RAW, you can even get more out of a photo since you can adjust exposure, contrast, temperature, lighting and many other things in post processing.
