I'm new to Windows 7, upgrading due to hard drive failure and then my back up drive failed. Plugged it in and the directory was gone. So a reliable back up procedure is really important to me at this point in time! A previous PC World article by L.Spector 1-18-2010

http://www.pcworld.c...tin_backup.html

described a variety of problems and viewer comments call out specific deficiencies. Since that was written in 2010, should I now consider Windows 7 Back up a trustworthy utility? I need 500 GB, too much to back up to Carbonite at the 2GB per day upload. Is there something better that I should consider?

I use Syncback Free - it simply backs up the file directories, no stupid proprietary format, allowing me to easily copy the files from the backup drive if needed without having to install the backup software at that moment. It also doesn't compress things - faster, but you'll need a bit more disk space for the backups.

I know it seems easy, but is so unsecure... You are much better using windows backup...

This article seems to only pertain to Windows 7 Pro. In Windows 7 Home Premium, there is no Control Panel choice for System and Security, and the existing "Backup and Restore" does not allow you to backup to a networked drive, i.e. another PC or networked External HDD. Funny that for all its shortcomings, at least Vista Home Premium allowed you to backup to a networked device. I recommend using Microsoft's "SyncToy" program. Once setup, it will serve you well, and you can actually use command line instructions within a batch file to sync your files to your networked device automatically once you tell your PC to shutdown. I do ... works great.

This is great information for consumers. I like the backup capabilities of Windows 7, and I always recommend using the free tools at your disposal instead of buying third-party software to do the same thing.

For SMBs, though--even an SMB of one person--I think more robust tools are necessary as outlined here: http://www.pcworld.c...p_in_2012.html. I recommend looking at cloud-based solutions because they provide a variety of benefits and advantages aside from the backup itself.

Hi All,
Can Windows 7 backup and restore utility be used for backing up the user created data to let's say external hard disk or usb drive.
While the first time it would do a full back up later on do the incremental or differential backup of only those files who have changed from a particular date.
Please help.

I always use Vibosoft Free Data backup for my windows 7, that's really a great tool, it is free, and easy to use.

it can
1. Make identical copy of any volume and backup hard disk to a partition images
2.Backup important files, folders, mails, volumes, application and more...
3. Completely restore partitions from image files without data loss.
