Hey everybody. I have a small issue. I was gifted Fallout 3 GOTY and have been playing it, but I am experiencing freezes. The game will just freeze up every 3-5 minutes. I did find a solution though I am not sure if it works because I have not tried it yet:

"Adding This line

iNumHWThreads=2

and editing this line (add if you don't have it)

bUseThreadedAI=1

Fixed my issue. Add it under the [general] tag to your fallout.ini file in your my documents\my games\fallout 3 "

Can anyone verify this before I go ahead and do that?

Hey BLuRR, Not sure as i never had any issues with the game. Make sure you are fully patched as there are several as I recall.

How can I check that out?

Not sure if it is 100% fixed, but I re set my graphics settings to default and seems to be helping so far.

Yep, on a few problematic CPU's, that does fix the game. Been forced to use it on many AMD machines.

I installed it and have been playing for a while with no problems ( except for getting killed ). I have played this on a Pentium D 945. i7 920 / 960 amd now this 17 2600k and have had no problems with it. You definitely shouldn't be having problems with that i5. I didn't really have any graphics settings as everything was maxed out at default. As for patches, at the start screen with START, DATA, and stuff, click to go the website and then look through for downloads. Haven't done that. Also, with the GOTY Edition make sure you install the seciond disk at the Start screen. Once done and you are at the start screen, click on DATA and make sure everything is checked.

All of the updates are through Steam, and I have all of those. The last update for it was released in 2009. Just had another freeze!

Ok. It might be a Steam thing as I have the disks and I'm not having any trouble. I did with the PS3 version in one or two of the DLCs. I went from the start all the way to Megaton, with some messing around along the way, without a single incident.

Oh Yaeh, look around outside of the walls of Megaton for a hollow rock. Has some nice goodies stashed in there.

Aight I will have to do that. I am reading that this game was not optimized for 4 cores so my i5 could be giving it issues.

Also again something about editing the games code in wordpad...yeah not doing that lol! I will just deal especially since it was a free game (Gifted by a Steam friend)

But right now I just learned really how to use the VAC aiming system (wow that has been amazing) And now this game really makes me wanna play Skyrim especially with the new high texture packs and mods where you can get one of the guys from Portal 2!

I'm not sure the quad core is an issue. As I said, I have played it on the i7 920 / 960 ( I upgraded the processor ) and this i7 2600k and haven't had any problems, but then again, I bought the disks and didn't download it from steam. I edited Mass Effect in Word Pad for some reason or other, but forgot why. I rarely have used that aiming system in Fallout 3. When I first got the game, I think it went through Windows Live Games, but the last few times I installed it, it didn't.

Whoa - the quad core issue affected 2 series of processors (AFIK), the Phenom Line (all of them) and the Core 2 Quads. This was entirely because of the timing differences between cores as I recall.

Your i5 should be perfectly fine. If you are locking up, I would start running system and driver tests. Make sure the system, and the software is all happy.

Download a slightly older WHQL driver from Nvidia (I know, everyone says latest. I suspect you already tried the latest.) Try OCCT with both GPU and CPU stress test mode. Also try changing out your sound card drivers (not likely any more - but still worth checking). Lastly, of course, make sure windows is up to date, and has nothing going on in the background that could affect this.

Yeah, I had some weird stuff happening with a game ( Dungeon Siege III ) that is tied into Steam. It would work fine, then all of a sudden the hot keys would quit functioning properly. I would hit the #4 key to heal and the start menu or Creative Sound Blaster menu would open instead ( that is for my head set, ( Creative Tactic Alpha )). No choice but to restart the game. I'm not sure, but I think notifications of incoming email may have been a part of the problem.

One thing I've noticed, with theis rig and the 560Ti card. I can gte up on a high place and there is a whole lot more detail of the countryside. I can clearly make out places I couldn't before with other cards.

I actually had a freeze up last night..........first time ever on the PC. I do have it maxed out on Ultra High though. I was at the Super Duper Mart and was really mousing & moving around pretty fast. Haven't had any more issues though and the settings are stil the same.

occasional lockups are normal for Fallout, but the constant lock up after 2 minutes or so.... not so normal.

Like I said, it has always played fine for me on the PC, but it was usually on high settings with AA at no more than medium. I have evrything maxed out on Ultra High and that is the only incident as it is running pretty darned smooth. Do want to check the FPS and see what I am getting at thiose settings though. May do that in a bit.

You shouldn't have any problems with Ultra on that 560Ti. The 5770 can handle Ultra @ 1080P easily enough, so the 560 should tear through it.

I've had a few more freeze ups of undetermined origins. I get quite a bit of game time before it happens though. It mostly happens when I enter a structure or getting ready to leave a structure. One time it was in the open.

That sounds normal for Fallout. Remember that you ARE hitting the limits of 32bit memory mapping with Fallout. Sometimes, it crosses that 2GB boarder. There is a fix for that, but I don't remember what it is.

I had heard about that from time to time, but never experienced it. The first Tim I played it was on my XP Machine running the Pentium D 945, 2 Gb of 533 Mhz ram, and I believe the 8600GT card, before I changed it out to the 9800GT. I might ad that I was playing it at 1024x768 res too. On the Gateway, I was playing it on Vista, with the i7 920, and I believe the 4850 card then changed to the 5770 card. I eventually added Windows 7 and of course had to try it on that as well. I then upgraded to the i7 960 Processor ( playing at 1680x1050 0n that ). As I said, no problems at all, so all the stuff I was hearing had me scratching my head. Hasn't been too much of an issue due to the fact it does an auto save when you enter a building anyway, most a nuisance and I do get a lot of gameplay in between ( because of the crash, it gives me an excuse to check my inbox & the forums ).

Ok. I have been for quite awhile with no crashes. I had noticed that the game had twi Icons pinned to the task bar. I unpinned one and then it would start from the one that was left. I then unpinned that one as well. That left me in a quandry as I couldn't fine the game anywhere, even with a Windows Explorer search, although it was present in Programs and Features. I was wondering how the heck i was going to start the game then remembered it would start automactically from the disk once it was inserted, so did. As I said, I haven't crashed since ( got killed a few times by a pesky madman I couldn't find ).
