Dare we hope... one OS for phone, tablet and desktop -- all capable of running the same apps?

Looks like it - MS have Windows 8 running on ARM so it's very likely, with skydrive they are looking to sync across all devices. It's very streamlined too so will run far faster than Windows 7:

Still no real Start Menu on the Desktop Interface? How disappointing, and disfunctional. (Gee, it's really nice to see that Microsoft is so diligently listening to the feedback submitted on this.)

Thats where im at, i have a feeling this is going to be a vista repeat.

they should call it "Vista Nu"

ironically the name also works "Wa-8t"
