One thing that stops me from trying out Linux is the sheer torrent of nonsensical names re. kernel, distro, desktop, etc., etc.

Imagine someone unfamiliar with Windows... confronted with a new something or another every other week.... wyndows, weendows, mintdows... you get the idea?

Maybe what we outsiders need is a good write up about "what's out there" in the Linux world, what they do and how they are different.

It's called Google. And if you're too lazy for that... distrowatch.com IS the first thing that comes up with words like list and distro.

Kernel and Desktop are part of Windows as well if you want to look into the names. Aero, Metro, Classic are all Windows Desktops to choose from. They are just hidden away so they don't scare people off. If you want to try linux I would recommend trying Ubuntu through Mubi which installs it inside Windows so you don't lose anything.

If you go over to distro watch the sight gives you a list of linux operating systems and how often they are viewed. Mint and Ubuntu being the top two. If your Internet is fairly fast and you have some blank dvd's, you can download them for free and try them out live without making any changes to your computer. This way you can see if the wireless is detected, has no problems with your computer hardware, etc. As for the names Microsoft windows is a distro, desktop is a windows name and a kernel is the engine that drives linux. Enjoy.
