I was having problems with some virus on my computer and I was told by someone that I could reload Windows 2000 on my machine and it would correct the problem without losing any of my data. I apperantly didn't do this correct because I can't get windows to finish loading and now I have nothing. I have tried several times to reload it and everytime it stops at the Registers Components. I am new to all of this, but does anyone know a way that I can undo what I have done or how I can get the reload to finish. Thanks in advance for any help.

[quote name='mikeedfeem']I was told by someone that I could reload Windows 2000 on my machine and it would correct the problem without losing any of my data.Hi Mike. I am not sure who told you that but anytime you do a "reload" or reinstallation of any operating system, any files on that drive will be gone. The only exception to that is if you have Windows on a separate drive or "partition" than your personal files. Can you post the exact error message or general message that you get when you attempt to reinstall Windows 2000?

It doesn't give me an error, it just locks us during the Registers Components. I thought maybe that part was just slow but I left it overnight and it was still stuck on the same part.

Okay, I did some looking around and here is what I found:When setup stops on "Registers Components", do the following: 1) Press Shift-F10 to bring up the console. 2) Type taskmgr and hit enter to bring up the task manager. 3) Click the Processes tab. 4) Click on fixmapi.exe or rundll32.exe. The problem may also be with one of the other programs that are started up during this stage of the setup procedure. 5) Click the End Process button. 6) When the warning pops up, click Yes to kill the process. If you don't see either of those two names in the process list, try killing other processes. You can open up the task manager before the setup program gets to the "Registers Components" stage and watch the processes start and stop. This may give you a better idea of which process is holding up the setup procedure. This should get you through the reinstallation process.

That worked. Thanks mphenterprises. This is something else you might be able to help me with. After it reloaded it restarted and when it came up it still had my background and all my documents were still there. Im not sure what I did different but I am happy it is still there. The only problem is that when I click on the internet icon I get an error. The error says "There was an internal error and one of the windows you were using will be closed". Do you know how I can fix this? Thanks for your earlier advise.

Okay for that I know it can be a registry issue. What I would recommend is to first close the browser and attempt to reopen it again. If it continues to happen, you can correct this issue within the registry. It is very important that you use caution if you decide to change the registry values. Here is a link to Microsoft's Support site that can guide you through if you do decide to proceed.http://support.microsoft.com/kb/259096You can download any type of registry editor via www.download.com. There are ways to do it directly through your computer but it's best to let a program do it automatically. If you do continue to get error messages, follow the direction in the link and that should correct the problem.
