Hi,
As you all know sony's panels are produced by samsung, even in smartphones (it's not about samsung) it's true (e.g. iphone by LG).
my question is why don't these manufactures produce their own panels?

Because that equipment is prohibitively expensive.
Sony partnered with Samsung to produce panels (meaning Sony fronted part of the money for the fabrication plants). Toshiba has partnered with Matsushita (Panasonic), LG and Phillips were partnered up. Now - things have actually changed recently. LG and Phillips have split, and Sony is now partnered up with both Samsung and LG for panels. Mitsubishi is one of the very few that I have not found a partnership going on.

so you mean if they hand it over to another company it costs less for them?

They don't need to build their own factories that way, so yes it's cheaper. Lots of companies don't actually make their own stuff. For instance - do you really think that all the components in an HP computer are from HP? Nope. PSU and ODD, Liteon. HDD, Seagate or WD. OS: Microsoft. Motherboard: ASUS. CPU: Intel or AMD. Dedicated GPU (if one): ati or Nvidia. RAM: something like Elpida or Samsung. See HP anywhere on that list? Nope.

It works out cheaper for everyone. If Sony gives Samsung $1B towards new plants to make LCD's, and in turn pay 1/2 what Funi or Vizio would end up paying to purchase the same panel from Samsung, then yes, it does work out well. Not only for Sony, but Samsung as well.

Actually no. Samsung does not have a partnership with Sony anymore. http://online.wsj.co...1003753118.html . LG has been partnered with Apple to produce its iPHone screens and iPad screens however there have been articles on korean news sites recently claiming apples desire to purchase OLED technology/ TV parts from LG. I believe apple knows once OLED TVs get hot, they will stay hot and because Sony didnt invest as much as it should have a few years ago, they are abandoning OLED TV plans. LG and Samsung are currently the front runner until recently. There has been speculation that Samsung will abandon its RGB (no color filter) technology and adopt LG's WOLED technology before they release their TV. This means LG will be the front runner for OLED TV just as they were for passive last year while Vizio quickly adapted the tech right after.

Interesting. I think Apple is trying to get deeper into the TV game like what Samsung and LG have been doing. We all remember how Carnegie got rich, apple is trying the same formula. I think its a lose/win situation though for apple. Its phones are starting to sink and pretty soon hit rock bottom. TVs might be a good look. I think for now, Apple shouldnt dip their fingers in OLED TVs just yet but should focus and some how soup up their Apple TV platform. Right now, Google TV is much more impressive IMO and if apple wants to get in the game, they need to make a big more. LG has already hooked up all their smart TVs for 2012 with the new GOOGLE smart tv platform and from what I've seen from CES and some other demo vids, its pretty damn nice.
