So I have done this before, and I wanted to add that if you do this keep in mind you need to block all of Facebook's domain's, even the mobile domain (m.facebook.com). Just blocking facebook.com won't work, junkies will find a way around lol.

Note: you NEED to run notepad as an admin to save changes to the hosts file. Also, if you wanted to block, say, facebook's subdomains, put *.facebook.com in your hosts file.

I'm desperately trying to block reddit from myself. I am logged in as an administrator and when I try to save a prompt box pops up and says I do "...not have permission to save; contact administrators. Would you like to save under My Documents?"

What am I doing wrong? I did double check under Control Panel/ Users and I am logged in as an administrator.

not have permission to save; contact administrators. Would you like to save under My Documents?".. in order to have the admin permissions you have to right click on the 'hosts' file choose properties go to security and make sure all boxes are checked in your user account.

I hope this helps you because this was for me.

Since I am a caveman when it comes to this stuff, I am not suprised that I am doing it wrong. I actually got to the right place and added the websites I wish to block right, but when I try to save it says something like this: 'You cannot save that here, try documents'. I tried to save the edited host thing and replacing the old one but it says this: 'Access denied'. Help me. Can you explain to me what I am doing wrong?

Will the asterisk method of url input work to block all sites? I would think most people with a basic level of understanding of urls would easily bypass a block.

I saved it to my desk top and then dragged it to the location it needed to be in.

1.Click on desktop using right mouse key
2.Create new shortcut
3.In enter location prompt write notepad.exe
4.Click next
5.Enter name prompt - just click finish
6.Right click on newly created notepad shortcut and select and open properites window
7.Paste and replace old data in destination element field ( upper editable field) with that string: %SYSTEMROOT%\System32\notepad.exe %SYSTEMROOT%\System32\drivers\etc\hosts
8.Then Click ok
9.Right click on that shortcut and click use as administrator
10.Modifiy values as you wish and save
11.Thats all

Or more directly:
1.Click on desktop using right mouse key
2.Create new shortcut
3.Paste that in location prompt input box:
%SYSTEMROOT%\System32\notepad.exe %SYSTEMROOT%\System32\drivers\etc\hosts
4.Click next then finish
5.Right click on that new shortcut us run as administrator , mess with the settings in that open file ( hosts ), save and close notepad
6.Changes in that file don't work immediately you must wait or reset computer to get proper effects.
