It's been really frustrating for me and others to see all these compact cameras with some sort of movie mode, but being crippled by crummy audio or no provision for an external mic jack. No wonder the likes of GoPro and its competitors are doing so well.

I agree. As a professional still and video photographer - I've even made it an effort to talk face to face with the people whom build these cameras; because one would actually expect more when placing at least 4k on a camera. Based on what I've heard so far... They claim that camera noise still frequently interferes with any on camera mike; and even the options for most off camera connections. They would prefer that users purchase completely detached mic systems and purchase programs like CS (full version 2k ++) and some additional plug-ins and then mix it in themselves.

On another note... Three such companies are working on higher quality audio for video (in still camera format housings); Sony, Pentax, and even Red - the people that make digital units for Hollywood

Based on the press releases, the Olympus SZ-31MR is more exciting to me than the Nikon S9300. The 24x optical zoom combined with a 4x digital zoom give you an unprecedented 96x in a travel zoom camera.

Anybody that "knows" photography, knows that "digital zoom" is WORTHLESS and just a selling gimmick to the unsuspecting point and shoot photographers. DSLR's do NOT have that feature... ever wonder why?
