Do you use a screensaver?

For years now, I've just set my monitor to turn off after 5 minutes (even when I had a crt, I didn't find this to be an issue, despite those needing 20 seconds or so to warm up). Generally, I find that if I haven't done anything in that amount of time, I'm not using the computer. I think screensavers are a waste of energy since you can't see what you're working on when that activates anyway, though I guess some might want to show off photos or something.

I participate in SETI@home and Einstein@home. The BOINC ss is cool. I also use the Aurora ss at times.

I agree with your point Brian but still I use it.

It's not set to run long before the monitor turns off though.

I have given thought to participating on that SETI@home thing. Be interesting to catch ET calling home. :D

I've wondered about those programs - I haven't seen any proven benefit to those, plus they increase my electricity bill and make my fans work harder, wearing them out faster. Otherwise, I might participate in one though. But why do you need to use its' screensaver?

There is no "benefit" per se. All I am doing is donating CPU time to projects I find interesting. Also, you don't have to use the BOINC SS, the projects will run in the background even if you choose to not run the BOINC SS. The BOINC projects are also customizeable... I don't have my PC run all the time, it sleeps after 20 minutes. Here is the BOINC website, and the list of projects that are available... http://boinc.berkeley.edu/ . Be advised, some projects will ask for donations, ignore them because the donation of your CPU time is enough IMO.

And you get a gold star in your geek cred file (tongue firmly in cheek).

But I haven't read of any actual important discoveries and stuff resulting from this. Unless I can find evidence of that, I won't bother with this.

I dont use screensaver, I use turn off after 10 minutes. Using screensaver is wasted PC usage it just gets in my way. I cant wait a second for screensaver to get out of my way PC hasta be faster than me or I forget what I was gonna do next. I dont got 6 cores at 4Ghz to wait for screensaver.

Same with those stupid "green" drives garbage, get a real drive and set it to turn off in a few minutes if you wanna be "green".

I turn my drives off after 3 minutes just so they stay cool.

Spin cycles are harsh on the drive, so don't do that. I don't have mine do that, and simply have the PC sleep after 30 minutes instead.
