Big Blue Screen can't compete with Google in the cloud just as applications on the PC are fast becoming passe. Finally freedom rings on the desktop. Well, almost.
Where Google is fumbling and stumbling badly is with Chrome OS. Poised to make Windows irrelevant with its thin and light OS coupled to its Docs application cloud, Google has all but squandered a golden opportunity to supplant the Windows/Office duopoly with a liberating alternative. Instead of a landmark and revolutionary development in personal computing, Google has treated Chrome OS like a college IT project suffering from Toga Party hangovers.
Whether Google delivers on the promise of an epically liberating computing platform will have everything to do with Google and nothing to do with Microsoft.

The trouble is the "Cloud", which is a nice place to visit and get some work done, is not a place I want myself nor my computer to live in.
I still want a standalone computer to safeguard my data and it's privacy. There is enough danger of being hacked as it is, I do not need to place my private data out in the cloud where it is even more likely to be hacked.
The bottomline is I will continue to want an independent operating system on my standalone computer behind an effective mechanical and software barricade to protect my privacy. Microsoft and Google will just have to realize that I will not be giving up that critical necessity of my existence.

I'm wondering why you would trust google over microsoft when from my experience I have to scroll down to the 2nd page in google to get to the link I want when it is at the top of my list when I use Bing? Thats for my BANK! Google in my opinion long ago sold out to questionable advertisers! What does a home morgage have to do when I type in my Credit Union? I want to check my account not refi my home... BUT in Google I have to go to the 2nd PAGE to do it when Bing gives me my bank at the TOP of MY LIST?

Even in the consumer market, it remains a laggard with the exception of on-line search and syndicated advertising.
All of this is a natural consequence of its having tied itself to the ad revenue model.

Not so for Google.
Google is an advertising firm masquerading as an IT services provider.

Aside from their SE, Google's true successes have been confined to a mere two of that which they bought, YouTube, and Google Analytics, nee Urchin, neither of which generate revenue. In fact, YT operates at a loss.
AdWords was copied from Overture, and succeeds solely by riding the coattails of its SE.
