Parallel printer port
WRONG!
Serial RS232 port.

WRONG. The RS232 port was a MALE port. The FEMALE port was always the parallel port.

"Primer on ports" only discussed USB ports; whyn't others. I am interested in FireWire and DVI ports which exists on almost all PCs but I hardly used them ever.

Did you try reading past page one? If not, you should try it.

My household has three older PC's (only one currently in use) which I believe all have RJ11 telephone jacks for dial-up internet access.

I hope PS/2 ports don't go away completely anytime soon--they don't take up much space and leave a USB port open for other things, if you still have an old reliable keyboard or mouse that uses one or an adapter kicking around.

Every monitor I've ever owned has had either a VGA or a DVI port; I have yet to come across one that requires HDMI or DisplayPort, though my PC has a port for it.

You won't see PS/2 go anywhere for a while, gamers have a hard on for it.
