I don't much like it either and I don't have house payments or a baby to worry about, meanng I have a little free money to spend. I did up grade the ram in the new laptop though today. Got 8 Gb of GSkill 1333 Mhz to replace the 6 Gb of Nanja 1066 Mhz that came in it. It will run up to 16 Gb, but no point in that.

My problem is that I end up with WAY too many projects going. Aside from all the PC projects, I have one motorcycles carbs sitting on a workbench, and a PC that I am stripping so I can paint it. Still finishing up the move to the new home as well...

My lenovo uses Ramaxel. I kept that 2GB stick as well as a g.skill 2GB stick. Both are 1333MHz, but underclocked to 1066MHz by the CPU. I've heard of Elpida, Hynix, Micron,and Samsung, but not Nanya (or Ninja :lol:). Edit: Whoever thought that making your website (Nanya.com) almost entirely out of adobe flash is an idiot... on the homepage: "This web need Macromedia Flash Player.Get Flash". Yep, it really says it with those typos.

I don't know if I mentioned it or not, but I have a near perfect solution to my problem: Windows 8. I had stopped using it for a while because of issues with games + AMD graphics. However, on the 8800GT, it freaking ROCKS!

I definitely can't see myself using Windows 8 - the metro UI is so unintuitive and stuff on a desktop, and it feels like a downgrade compared to Windows 7. It's like running Android on a PC - the OS is good on the right hardware (tablet, maybe phone), but it sucks on the desktop.

I happen to enjoy using it on the desktop. There are a few minor things I don't like, but all in all, it works well enough.

@coastie and waldojim,
Off topic: I'm getting ready to pull the trigger and get Skyrim. You guys are pretty familiar with my system --- do you think it has the chops to run the game satisfactorily?

@waldojim Do you think they'll offer an option to disable metro in the final version? (I've heard they didn't do that in the beta to force people to try the metro UI.) I've heard that it'll be disabled by default unless you have a tablet (if that's the case I'm ok with it; if not, I'm NOT ok with it AT ALL).

For the most part I dont see where you will have any problems. You just need to understand that Skyrim has settings to run on the most barebone systems all the way up to the most hardcore. Ultra quality NEEDS a powerful i5/i7 to run well. In the same breath, I ran it on my Sempron with med/high quality, and it did well. I will post up fun numbers as I get a chance.

Yeah, I know what you mean. Pretty much the same around here. :P In my case, just chores around the house for the most part.

I downloaded Skyrim last night and have played with it for about 30 minutes (I know what you guys mean about too many projects :D ). I'm running at the default setup that the game installed (see image) and according to Fraps my fps is between the high 30s, maxes at 60, tends to stay in the 50s. When the fps drops to the 30s I don't detect any lag but it's interesting that there isn't any increased action happening that would normally slow down the game.
Which, by the way, is beautiful. I'm not so good at RPGs but this one was spendy so I'm going to deal with the learning curve. :lol: Besides, I'm getting a little tired of the run-and-gun games.

Looks like it has you running on high settings. If you want to try and squeeze a little more performance out of it, try the FX AA or turn the AA down. I prefer to run 16AF over AA myself.

The drops you see in the FPS should be points where the CPU has increased physics effects to deal with, and inscreased lighting effects. Remember that everything you can interact with has thier own physics calculations that must be done repeatedly. The sheen off the rocks also must be dealt with.

Thanks wj, I'll play around with the settings to see which balances out the best for my setup.

EDIT: I turned of AA and enabled FXAA. The game still looks terrific and the fps is staying in the 50s and low 60s. I'll stick with that for a while.

Sure is.
I'm playing in 3rd person view because I like to see my character, on the easiest settings (no shame here :lol: ) and there seems to be just the right balance of puzzles, action, and leveling up activities. The controls for all the different options are fairly complicated but I'm getting the hang of them. Oh, and did I mention the game is gorgeous?
