I have a lil utility program that I downloaded some time ago. HDD Health. Some of you may have heard of it. It is supposedally tells you the overall health of your system. Whether it works or not I dont know.

After I do my weekly "maintenace", I always run it. It says my HDD is 100% Excellent. Whatever.

However, my question is this:

It says my main HDD temperature is 32C, and my system temp is 52C.

Whats too hot, or to cold?

I further realize different systems are going to run at different temps and have seen some gaming computers that use a liquid cooled processor,
so based on my lil desktop system described below, what should I consider normal operating temperature, and should any of these programs that supposedly monitor your HDD health actually accurate?

As always, thanks in advance,

Sid

For the case, 52C is a bit hot. (30-40C is normal) For the CPU, idle temps in the 30s and load temps up to 70 are normal. (try HWmonitor for that.)

Hey Sid, That system temp is a bit high. I would check your fans and make sure they are up to snuff as well as overall airflow through there. Mine is around 28c at the moment. My Hdd's are at 32c as well, so you are fine there. As for CPU temps, Mine never gets out of 40'sc under load. My eMachines on the otherhand, idled at around 38c and would got around 63c Under load. The Gateway, on the other the CPU idled in the mid 30'sc and woulf get into the 40's and maybe to 50c under load. At lot depends on the fans and airflow. The eMachines was a mini tower with a lot of stuff crammed in there and npt too good of airflow, not to mention a rather small case fan.

52C is considered very high for your system. If you have standard electrolytic capacitors on your motherboard, its life may well be shortened. This is also true for your power supply. If you do not have an intake fan, I would suggest getting one. If you have an extra place in the back of the case for exhaust, I would also get one for it. Do not use side vents, they will create airflow problems.

As for the hard drive, don't worry about it too much. Studies have shown that the harddrive is relatively immune to most temperature swings. Just try to keep it under 60c! :D
