I am using O/S Windows 7, normally when I insert a USB Drive to read the content and after that clicking on the green sign in the toolbar, a message that I can now safely eject the drive appears for me to safely pull out the drive from my computer.

Of late, an unexpected message comes up to warn me that Windows is still using the drive, asking me to close the program and try again later. Although all programs are closed and I am back to desktop, still the same message comes up to prevent me from pulling out the USB Drive. I have to shut down the Computer and then pull the USB Drive out.

I need help to resolve this problem; any suggest for me to try out will be greatly appreciated. Thank you CHIN3927

Are there any processes running that could possibly be accessing the drive?

Do all your USB's do this, or just a particular one?

I simply restart the machine. Some times the processes do not release the drive even though you have closed the application that accessed the drive. Depending on the application you used and perhaps how long you had the drive in the USB port, Windows will keep the file in memory and that will also hang up the USB drive. I know some people to will simply pull the drive out, but that is a good way to destroy a file at best and a USB drive at worst. I have had several destroyed that way. When I take a file to someone, if they are going to copy it onto their machine, I take my oldest least valuable one that generally has no data on it, so if they destroy it with a static spark, I haven't lost much.

Thank you for the caution; ok, will just resort to retarting the machine.

One other thing you might try. If you have just accessed the USB drive and you get that warning, you can change active folder in Windows Explorer by clicking on another drive and just do a directory listing or even open a file. Then after a few minutes of not having the USB drive as the active drive try again. If that does not work, then do the restart.
