Windows 8 Installation
#1
Posted 03 March 2012 - 10:45 PM
I recently installed Windows 8 on a separate partition and when I started browsing around the Windows folder, I noticed that there were 3 versions of folders titled "Windows.old.00x", where x is a number. In the folders, the files are exactly alike so I am assuming during installation, Windows 8 copied the same files over and over again into separate folders. Also, it seems that the files inside the Windows.old.00x folder are files of Windows 8. Weird.
So does anyone have the same folders when they look into their Windows files? Or is it safe to delete them then?
Thank you!

The Windows.old folder is put there when you reinstall or do an upgrade install to a new version of Windows--the installation program moves your old files there so you don't lose them.
The numbers happen if you do multiple reinstalls without deleting the Windows.old folders.
However, since you installed Win8 on a clean partition, I have no explanation for your having that folder.
I've installed Windows 8 on a VMWare virtual machine, and don't see that at all.

Say, what version of vmware do you have and do you have the proper video drivers in it? I have vmware WS 7.1.5 and it doesn't work there (I get a HAL BSOD before setup starts). The only update it's offering me is 8.0, which is a pay update. I've stuck with virtualbox so far, which works, though, except for the video driver.
Edit: I just upgraded to 8.0.2 and that works without a problem. (so far anyway, I just got into setup)

I downloaded the previous Windows 8 preview version and that version wouldn't connect to the internet which makes Windows basically unusable. The error I got was the driver for the Artheros wireless card wasn't found. We sisnce then I installed an Intel wireless card and I installed the newest released Windows 8 preview in Oracle's virtualbox and it connects fine.

VMWare Player (the free version) 4.0.2.
I had a horrible time installing it at first. Failed several times. Then I tried the 64-bit version and it worked fine. That makes it the first 32-bit OS that I wasn't able to install on 64-bit hardware.

I notice that vmware WS also installed that version of the player, so I assume it uses the same brains/engine as the latest version of WS. I tried the 64-bit version off the bat, 64-bit win7 as a host, but downloaded the 32-bit ISO anyway.
