There are BOTH paid subscription version and even free versions of laptop locating devices that work with any laptop made since 2002. The same can be said for encryption; both free version and software versions.
Since nasa has a united states federal government budget (and also **some sort of** I.T. department) WHY are they not using these items.
Also of note... That on one of these laptops were quite technical details regarding the new remote controlled unmanned space planes - sorry the techn number of the spaceplanes seems to elude me at this moment.

No, it's a case for better security for access to their notebooks. It is rare for a notebook to be stolen from someone who keeps it in their sight or in their hands. It's carelessness pure and simple.

If this was my organization or my IT department, heads would roll. Laptops should all have had encryption and location tracking, cell phones also. Policies and procedures to hold users accountable. Termination a likely action if loss was due to neglect or carelessness. Management not doing their job in my opinion. I work for a financial instution that had this covered years ago! We have never had a laptop stolen or lost, and 2 cell phones taken in an auto burglary (not smart phones fortunately). Just be accountable!
