Okay, I get the idea behind the Metro UI. But there's something wrong with this metaphor: My Android and my tablet are mine - it's okay if I swipe my fingers all over the screen. I don't want to touch the monitor of a desktop computer that has other users.

There's another thing about Metro: It's not so good for monitor sales. Being close enough to the monitor to use your fingers makes it less convenient to have a big monitor, or dual monitors. Too much reaching.

I'm fine with Metro for a phone, a tablet, even a laptop. For a desktop computer, it blows. I'll be sticking with Windows 7.

I find that Win8 is not giving users a choice in how they user their PCs, trying to fit everyone into a space they believe is right, which is only right for a very few people. Unless I'm given a choice, I will not upgrade to Win8.

I hate this most recommended sort option as default on PCWorld. How can anyone read through this thing and it make sense? You have responses to comments that are further down, so alot of stuff gets taken out of context when reading in this order.

Anyway, since it's Windows 8, shouldn't the title be: 8 Things You May Just Hate? Or couldn't they find one more thing that sucks about the Metro UI? I would like to hear what gamers think of this. Most PC gamers use a mouse and keyboard for games and I imagine this makes using the PC in Windows 8 counter-intuitive. Who knows, maybe the next Call of Duty will be touch-enabled. Swipe, tap, double-tap, DEAD. Swipe, double-tap, DEAD. Swipe, DEAD. (Geez, there most be some prick with a mouse and keyboard playing.) PC gamers have an advantage because of the mouse and keyboard. If they stopped using the mouse and keyboard for everything else, it may cause the game experience to suffer over time. Just saying.

It's a Mac OS. I sold my Mac just for this reason.

Once again, Microsoft has tried to 'get cute' and now make the pc desktop look like a smartphone interface. Great Job Morons, Pass.

I agree about grabbing the screen with the mouse to move it. That was what I was expecting when I get a new PC and it has Win 8 on it.

What an UN-surprise! Where has this author been burying his head!

"The interface has been widely praised around the Web," More PCW pro-M$ propaganda. There has been *far* more criticism than praise for Win 8 on the PCW forums.

This is the distant rumble of thunder for what will become the worst-received MS platform *ever*.

Wow! You mentioned almost every disappointing thing I noticed while using Win 8 for a two day period. If this operating system acts the same way in final form, I WILL NOT PURCHASE WIN 8 FOR MY DESKTOPS OR LAPTOPS. Win 7 is very good, and my attitude will be much the same as the attitude of a lot of Win XP users when Vista was brought out. At that time, it wasn't a matter of whether or not Vista was a good replacement (though many believed it not to be), it was whether or not XP was good enough. Additionally, my two days of Win 8 experience has made me believe that Win 7 is the better desktop and laptop OS of the two. Microsoft ... if you do not fix these problems with Win 8, it will not be good enough to cause desktop and laptop purchasers to want to rush to the various venders to purchase a new computer. And while it might be very good for tablets, the iPad and the various Android OSs will dominate there. Win 8 will die an ignominious death.

Dear Author,

M$ has no intention of "correcting" any of those problems. M$ has already said: "We know a lot of people aren't going to like the Metro UI, but we're going to keep it anyway."

So learn to live with it. That's what they expect.

1.) There ARE NO dual-screen smartphones or tablets, so don't expect any decent support for them on desktop PCs. (M$ and PCW expect them to quickly become obsolete anyway.)

2.) The "desktop" is for what M$ calls "Legacy Apps". If you understood the industry, you'd know that means that the "desktop" as you know it will soon cease to exist. Entirely.

3.) Metro Apps are intentionally designed only to work in full-screen or one-third screen, because that's the only way that tablets and smartphones can handle multi-windows. M$ has no intention of making them work any other way. It would defeat the whole purpose of the Metro UI cross-platform design. (aka: One Size Fits All Hardware -- exactly the same way.)

4.) "Metro apps are easier to navigate with a finger than with a mouse." Well, DUH! Most Pros have been pointing this out since the pre-release of W8. Again, where have you been?

Only if the change is stupidly counter-productive -- such as most of the Metro UI on desktops and latops. (...And for all but the cluless "ivory-tower" professionals and journalists, who can perform their entire, tiny little jobs on a tiny little smartphones.)

I work in IT.

I built a Win8 TOGO flash drive.

Spent some time on it, and well... I can deal with it BUT absolutely hate it.

WHY?

Took the TOGO drive around to "users" at work, and at home with family and friends. You know the non-tech people who don't come to these sites.

THERE IS NOT ENOUGH PAINKILLERS on this planet for me and everyone else for the pain that is coming trying to teach people how to use this OS.

Amen Brother! You have hit the nail on the head. *Nobody* at M$ bothered to check out the practicality of the Metro UI with the 95% of REAL end-users -- who don't even have a clue that Windows 8 is about to smack them in the face.

Your experience will be just the tip of the iceberg!

Mouse and track pad as input devices will see their end of life in the near future. All PC's regardless of their form factors will be equipted with a touch screen or a pen. Monitors will be positioned relatively flat on a desk for touch input.

Windows 8 is basically a superset of Windows 7 with higher performance. Almost all applications running on Windows 7 runs on Windows 8 Don't understand why you think Windows 7 is better than Windows 8.

Looks like i'm going to stick with Windows 7 and XP for a bit longer for my 3 computers until M$ comes out with Windows 9.

Mice and other input devices will remain! PC's are still largely driven by the gaming world and your not gonna play a serious MMO or FPS by touching your screen. Also placing monitors flat on you desk will create ergonomic havoc for many.

I tried the evaluationversion and got more frustrated then i a ever was in 55 years. I keep Windows 7 as long i can and i refuse to work on a touchscreen, i want a mouse in my hand and not filthy fingers all over my screen.

Does Windows 3.1/Windows 95 and DOS feel like separate operating system??? Windows 7 is here and still the OS comes with Dos. Yet the majority of us don't bother using it.
Eventually the majority of us will overlook the desktop and use only the Metro style UI.
