In fairness, that would not be a bad idea. Also, given that you can customize the desktop to have all but the start button, may be it will help if MS does some of this customization by the time the final version comes out. For example pin the program file, documents, devices and printers, computers and the control panel etc. to the desktop when in the desktop portion of Windows 8. Or they can have it such that when you go to one of the hotspots in desktop mode, most if not all of the items you see when you click on start button in Windows 7 show up. So the only thing that will really be missing in this latter case will be the actual start button. This will make the lack of the conventional start button in desktop mode easier to accept for most I think.
