I hope MS does everything possible to disable this app by the time Windows 8 ships. There is too much encouragement of the spirit of unwillingness to learn going around under guise of journalism. It is attitudes like this why a college student for example isn't ashamed to tell you that in just two week after taking two consecutive semesters of calculus, they do not even know/remember what a derivative is.

Why not just give the consumer a choice of Metro or Regular interface? Or is this a Republic of MS?

I completely agree with them. Metro sucks, and if anything will make you less productive than Windows 7. If I ever get Windows 8, I'll definitely be using that program. (unless they offer a way to disable metro in the UI, that is)

In fairness, that would not be a bad idea. Also, given that you can customize the desktop to have all but the start button, may be it will help if MS does some of this customization by the time the final version comes out. For example pin the program file, documents, devices and printers, computers and the control panel etc. to the desktop when in the desktop portion of Windows 8. Or they can have it such that when you go to one of the hotspots in desktop mode, most if not all of the items you see when you click on start button in Windows 7 show up. So the only thing that will really be missing in this latter case will be the actual start button. This will make the lack of the conventional start button in desktop mode easier to accept for most I think.

I tried the Stardock solution, and it's horrible. All it does is give you a smaller view of the Metro interface. Install a few programs and see how bad it gets. I did find ViStart from Lee Soft to be an actual recreation of the start button.

It took me 2 years to shift from Windows 3.11 to Windows 95 - I thought the start button was a dumb idea - and now . . . well, to be honest, I still like 3.11 - the Metro UI will just take some getting used to, just like it did for some to get used to the start button.

This is stupid. If you don't want to embrace Windows 8, stick with 7. Geez, I assumed the folks visiting this site were tech enthusiasts, but I am learning you're all a bunch of tech illiterates.

Actually, now that I've researched Start8 a little more, I don't like it. I'll definitely be sticking with Windows 7 now...
