Three things: nice screen, better camera, and if cellular then LTE (but kind of sort of not at&t)?? So . . . for a pretty screen I should buy this? NOT.

So... You get a better screen but the old one was also good enough. You get faster internet but only in some places. You get siri but only dictation. You get a better camera but not as good as the iphone's, which was already nowhere as good as a proper camera. Yet you still recommend people to fork out $500, or better $600 or $700 because of the better quality of screen (which hasn't changed the viewing area) you'll need more storage. Are you kidding or what? And you didn't even test the battery properly.

No-one said you should. But hey - on the basis of your posting history, if it came with a cure for cancer you'd still not buy it, so who cares?

Your interpretation of "Users of the iPad 2 shouldn't fret: Their iPad investment is certainly good for another year." differs from mine. And, I suspect, from most people's.
If I dispute one single point in a post, that should not be taken as an indication that I agree/disagree with any other point made by that poster or anyone else in the thread. Or anywhere else. Ever.

I read the entire article, and maybe I missed it, but what I got from it was summarized by this sentence:

Quote

Users of the iPad 2 shouldn't fret: Their iPad investment is certainly good for another year.

But I have an 1st gen iPad, so I ordered my "new iPad" already and I'm looking forward to the huge bump in processing and graphics performance. All the people I know who have iPad 2's, however, don't plan on getting the new iPad.

"When I tested Amazon’s Kindle app with the new iPad, I found that its text was pixelated, not Retina-crisp."

Kindle for retina iPad was released today.

Just got mine today, upgraded from an iPad (gen 1). The display is simply amazing, nothing comes anywhere near its crispness and color richness. The additional features and functionality make it well worth the cost IMO.

Logged into my SlingBox HD PRO, selected a HD channel and the difference between the new iPad and the first gen iPad just blew me away. Can't wait to try some HD movies.

Setting up the new iPad using iCloud restore was a breeze and took about 5 minutes from sealed box to a fully configured and cloned copy of my original iPad. No messing around, now downloading apps, no configuration settings except for some email passwords.

This matches my experience almost exactly. I'd also add that the smartcover is a thing of beauty.

I love the smartcover also, but I'll be shopping around for some sort of protective cover for the back side.

The genius at the Apple store showed me something I wasn't aware of, the split keyboard option. It must have been pushed to the iPad in a recent iOS update - works on my 1st generation iPad too. Simply drag the two halves of the keyboard away from each other and thumb away! There's an option in the keyboard settings but it looks like the default is "on". Maybe I'm late to the game, bit I've never seen it mentioned anywhere.

I'm not too fussed about the back, which is why I like the smartcover—once the screen's protected, anything more's a waste ;)

Split keyboard came in with iOS 5 IIRC. Nice idea, but my thumbs don't seem to be trained for it yet!

And yea, I'm still far from convinced by the camera: feel a right plonker trying to frame a shot with a tea-tray, and with the sensor being at the corner, finding the desired angle is a bit non-intuitive. Good for AR, but I don't see myself using it for much more—I'd have been as happy with the cameras in the iPad 2.

I didn't have iCloud yet, so my restore from backup took about an hour. Very nice display, much faster than original iPad. One of the first new apps I installed was Real Racing 2. I bought the LTE version and so far it has been a bust. According to Verizon's coverage map they have good LTE service in the northern areas of San Diego County, but at home and the 2 other places I tried it I could only get 3G service. I'll also be getting a smartcover and keep the slip on cover with my original iPad.

You're definitely not popular with everyone when you're at the top (or just
plain good at what you do), because there are just as many who envy and
resent you, as respect and admire you. But Apple seems to be as capable at
defending themselves as they are at building great products. And part of a
good defense is an awesome offense, and Apple scores well there both by
constantly improving their products, and aggressively prosecuting those who
attempt to illegally copy them.

Nothing much new ever seems to come out of MS, and...like you...I don't
think their (re-)entry into the tablet market will be any different.
Remember, they're the ones who created this market in the first place, or at
least attempted to. But Apple...the masters at integration and
design...waited until the supporting technologies had matured to the point,
where a capable, stand-alone portable computing device was actually viable.
Everyone takes those design elements for granted now, but it wasn't until
Apple came on the scene that this 'fanatical attention to detail' made all
the difference, and allowed the iPad to be born.

Sorry for the double post. I didn't hit 'Submit Comment' twice, so I'm not sure how that happened...or, the double-spacing. (macspirit)

The build quality is great, the screen is awesome, lots of apps. The ergonomics are still awful. The iPad is difficult to hold, the volume, power, and hold buttons are sharp, and cheap feeling. On top of all of this, it still runs iOS, the oldest and least innovative of all the tablet OS'. All of this being said the apps and mainstream acceptance will drive it's sales for months to come. I for one am bored.
