I have several external hard drives, one from Toshiba and two from Western Digital. I have repeatedly tried to connect them with different computers (Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, from Dell, Gateway, and HP) via several different powered hubs (USB 2.0). They are never recognized by the OS thru the hub, but always recognized when connected directly to the PC (thereby taking up one or more of my too-few USB ports). All three hard drives are powered through their own electrical plugs. Why can't my systems recognize and use them?

That is the joy of USB...some devices just must be connected directly to the computer. And it is not just dependent on the type of device...I have had some printers that work fine through hub but others that MUST be connected directly to the computer.
