Icon Refreshing

Why do desktop icons refresh? For instance, when to do an Adobe Reader or Flash Player update, it refreshes your desktop icons. And its not just Adobe, sometimes just clicking on a link causes the icons to refresh. Anyone know why this happens? Thanks!
