The only thing that sucks about these is they usually have a high power requirement and some devices still have 500ma USB ports.

My 1TB WD drive cost me $100 at Amazon. My 500 GB drives cost nearly that much, purchased a few months prior. I want to say I got them in April or May, would have to look. Currently, the 1TB still sells for just under $100 at Amazon, am thinking about getting it. PS: best way to hook these drives is into a hubbed monitor. I use older models Dell 1707FP-1908FP, with four USB ports. Thus you avoid the complaints about WD Passport, which saturate Amazon's reviews about them.

Even at 2.0 (since the monitor is older), WD backup is swift. Best thing is that the drive goes to sleep without problems, since it's not hooked up to the back of the computer. When your monitor sleeps, so does the drive. It sometimes sleeps when the monitor is active, and then when you access it, the thing wakes up. Really efficient. Stays cooler that way. The packaging for these drives is especially nice. The package pops open when you take it out of the cardboard box -- someone was thinking clearly when he redesigned the idea of 'bubble'. So you can keep the tray! Great for travel.

I prop the drive on the bottom part of its original-packaging tray for added cushion (since it's on a wobbly folding table top). Makes its TOO SHORT cord be closer to the monitor hub, and makes it easier to transport from one machine to another. And the colors, are fabulous.

I'll shut up now, lest you think I work for WD. Sorry to crow so much. Posted Image
