You can install CutePDF and if you have Word installed then you can start putting out your own pdf files, which are pretty much ebooks.

Now you can publish with BookTango as well - I noticed it wasn't mentioned here. BookTango has an easy user interface that the average tech-savvy writer can use to produce and distribute, most of the time for completely free.
Some of the sites you mention here don't allow such an easy interface, and require using additional software and methods to produce and distribute.

that' a crap. the best format now and for the future is html
One reason I like pdf format is that there are search programs that can search through all the pdf files in a folder (at least, there used to be one - a pointer to it or others like it would be welcome). Is there an app that can do the same for a folder full of html files?
Another reason is that there's a uniformity of display imposed by the pdf format that may not be available in html due to differences in browsers. I'm not sure whether this is a valid issue either, so would welcome clarification on both points.
But perhaps the most important reason for an author would be that a pdf file can be secured against modification - at least, so it's claimed. Can html files be locked also so they can only be read?
