I'm not going to get into a shouting match with anyone on this, I am only pointing out a low cost working alternative for a low cost server installation.
For a small company, lets say 5 to 20 people, using a mix of Apple, iPads, iPhones and PC running Windows an Apple Mac Mini server could be the answer. For a larger work group you can move up to the powerful Mac Pro.
You can run your own company domain, calendar, wiki, print server, backup and so on. The important thing to remember is that this unit can be under lock and & in your own building. Support and maintenance cost are low. Depending on your staff, you may not need to have a lot's IT people on staff, one trained staff member can run this system part time.
If you have a few newer Mac's already in place and your requirements are not too high, you can always load OS X. Server on one of them and still use the unit for other business related tasks. All at the same time. The cost of adding the Server software to Mountain Lion is only $20.00
